Help Raise $600 Million for Your Community: Ask Your State Representative to Support the HEAL Act

As the legislative session drags on in Springfield and lawmakers try to find common ground on budget issues, here’s one suggestion that would make a huge difference; The Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL) Act, which would raise $600 million for the state of Illinois to fund obesity prevention and shore up Medicaid programs that are vital to the well-being of our communities.

Many kids and families in our communities are suffering from preventable conditions like diabetes, cancer and heart disease. Sugar-sweetened beverages are the single largest source of added sugar in American’s diet, contributing to high rates of diabetes, some cancers, obesity, and heart disease that cost Illinoisans over $6 billion a year in unnecessary health care costs.

According to a recent public poll, 65 percent of Illinois voters support a proposal to enact a penny-per-ounce tax on sugary drinks and to use the proceeds to improve Illinoisans’ health.

Please take a minute and ask your lawmakers and the governor to support this popular solution to keeping Illinois healthy.

Nearly two-thirds of Illinois voters understand the harmful effects of sugary beverages and are willing to pay a small tax in order to fund critical health programs like restoring Medicaid and investing in community prevention programs that aim to reduce disease and save future healthcare costs. Simply said, the voters of Illinois are willing to raise revenue through a small sugary beverage to pay to keep people healthy and to help care for those who are sick, many with obesity-related chronic illness like diabetes and heart disease. This would be a BIG WIN for health and a HUGE LOSS for diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer!

Please call your legislator today to advocate for this win-win solution to our budget issues. Please find the call script here.
