Council panel endorses $5.5 million reparations fund for Burge victims

Setting aside concerns that the heirs of torture victims of notorious Chicago police Cmdr. Jon Burge would get short shrift, a City Council committee on Tuesday endorsed a $5.5 million reparations package for those preyed upon by Burge and his so-called midnight crew of rogue detectives.

Under the proposal, hammered out by Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s top City Hall attorney and longtime legal advocates for Burge victims, scores of mostly African-American South Side men whose confessions were the product of torture that included electric shocks, beatings, smotherings and simulated Russian roulette will each be eligible for cash awards of up to $100,000.
