In FY2007, the ILAACP rose to the challenge and spearheaded a campaign to restore funds to 37 community-based agencies across Illinois that lost their Teen REACH after-school programs. More than 60 youth from Teen REACH programs marched in Chicago’s Columbus Day Parade in support of the Teen REACH programs. And another group of 120 youth and parents traveled to Springfield to meet legislators during the Illinois General Assembly’s veto session to voice their support for the program. The effort led the Senate to pass SB 1537, which included a $1.9 million supplemental appropriation that allowed Teen REACH organizations to continue their programs for the remainder of the program year.
