As a member of the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity, the ILAACP engages and educates the public on the Rethink Your Drink campaign through grassroots organizing and media messaging. The health of our children and families is vital to the future prosperity of our communities. Sugar-sweetened beverages are the single biggest source of added sugar in Americans’ diet, contributing to high rates of diabetes, some cancers, obesity, and heart disease that cost Illinoisans over $6 billion a year in unnecessary health care costs. A key portion of the campaign is the passage of the Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) Act, which places a penny per ounce excise tax on sugary beverages with revenues going to community obesity prevention (50%) and preventative services for the Illinois Medicaid program (50%).
Goals for the Rethink Your Drink/ HEAL Act campaign are:
• Increase awareness of the impact of sugar-sweetened beverage consumption on African Americans’ health
• Increase awareness of the Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) Act
• Promote a healthy lifestyle within the African American community
• Tackle the growing obesity epidemic by lowering the intake of sugar-sweetened beverages
